humpback whale

With whale hunting back on the table the number of whales is sadly decreasing every year – so is their natural habitat. Here in Panama we are lucky to be able to still share our lives with these creatures, and give the rest of the world a little glimpse of them as well. Panama has been fighting for the rights of the whales for years now. Panama even held the 64th international whaling commission in 2012.

It was again agreed that the conservation of the whales is important and reiterated that whaling is now fully under international control with enforceable management and compliance, which all whaling nations got to adhere to. However, whaling is still a great threat, especially because Japan (one of the biggest whaling nations) and its allies have stopped a Latin American proposal, which asked to create a sanctuary for endangered whales in the southern Atlantic.

Some countries will argue that whaling is part of their culture and heritage, which has got to be respected. However, until whale stocks in our oceans have regenerated fully, whaling will only contribute to extinction of a whole species and ultimately a part of the culture and heritage of those countries.

For now, we are lucky enough in Panama to see whales returning each year – to bread relatively safely at our shores.

Boquete is a good place to be when you want to watch the humpback whales that come to Panama’s shores for breeding purposes. It has great transportation links to the beaches and islands. When in Boquete you can book island and whale watching tours, which will take you to some great private beaches. While on the boat to the islands you will be able to see the whales, sometimes just a few feet away from your boat. If you are lucky you won’t just see them but actually hear them. This is because the male humpback whales will sing their songs to attract females for the breeding season. It is a phenomenal experience. The Chiriquí gulf national Marine Park or Coiba Island Marine Park are the destinations you want to be in, if you want to get the best whale watching experience possible. However, whales are not the only ocean habitants that come to Panama’s shores. For the really brave between you there is the possibility to actually swim with dolphins. Don’t miss out on a life time experience, get yourself down to Panama and stay at out Hostel in Boquete.
